Frequently asked questions

What does flatlo.ch do?

Between two places in Lausanne it finds the shortest route, the flattest one and every compromise in between. The slider steps through them, with the distance, climbing and steepest gradient of each.

Why is the flattest route not always free of climbing?

Some climbing cannot be avoided: you cannot get from Ouchy to the station without going uphill. flatlo.ch avoids only the unnecessary climbing, the part another way can spare you.

Where do the elevations come from?

From swisstopo's swissALTI3D terrain model, accurate to about half a metre. The bridges over the Flon are treated as bridges, not as the valley floor.

Are stairs and lifts taken into account?

On foot, yes: stairs are allowed and some public lifts are used. By bike, stairs, footways and pedestrian zones without a permit are excluded.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Everything is computed in your browser, with no cookies and no analytics. Only your language choice is kept on your device.

Can I take a route with me?

Yes: “Copy link” reopens exactly the same trip, and “Download GPX” saves it for a navigation app such as Organic Maps, OsmAnd or Komoot.
